LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT.
The Language Department was ranked as the best department during the previous Prize Giving Day, a position we are going to safeguard even in the future. This Department is currently the largest Academic Department with eight staff members who as well belong to other departments in line with their teaching subjects. Four of these staff members are Teachers of English, three are Teachers of Kiswahili and one French teacher. Also, the Language Department takes charge of the Drama Club, Debate Club and Journalism Club among others whose Patrons are Ms Esther, Ms Millicent and Mr Apopo respectively.
We have seen the Languages performances going up year after year when the students sit for their National Examinations even though a group of candidates may not perform as better as their colleagues in the previous year. This would be determined by the Language Entry points when these students were being admitted. If the students’ entry points are high, their final grade, the moment they sit for their National Examination, will also be high.
Again, one of our clubs has lifted the school’s name higher and higher year after year. This is the Drama Club. Now for the last Three years, the Drama club has managed to take items to the National Music Festivals. This has made St Aloysius name popular nationally. We are very sure that this is bound to go on in the future and even take items to the National Drama Festivals which so far we have gone up to the Provincial level. We hope to break the barriers.
One of the setbacks which we as teachers of languages experience day in day out, is the negative influence of the students’ mother tongues and colloquial languages like sheng’ have on the students spoken and written English, Kiswahili and French which are the languages they are examined through while in school. Due to the bad language influence, the students end up having so many difficulties while trying to communicate in the right language. We as the Department, have not turned a deaf ear towards this challenge but we have a Language Policy in place where by the students are supposed to speak in English from Monday to Wednesday and in Kiswahili and French from Thursday to Saturday. This works for us.
In future, we expect to retain the position of the best Department in St Aloysius. This will be realized through more hard work. We expect to improve the Languages performances to greater heights.
